For Robby and Shannon Gault, Kansas City Dumpster Rentals are Personal
The team at Small Haul Containers knows a thing or two about the need for a small dumpster rental service. Born out of first-hand experience with a DIY home renovation, Robby and Shannon Gault bring a unique perspective to Small Haul that many other business owners can’t.
Shortly into their Johnson County home renovation project, the couple quickly identified a gap in the residential dumpster rental market – or, rather, realized there was no market. With a lifelong passion for entrepreneurship and helping others, Robby set out to create a company that enabled homeowners to rent a dumpster that was the right size for the job.
Now, three years later, Robby, Shannon, and the Small Haul team have experienced growth they never anticipated. Giving homeowners access to small dumpster and container rentals has not only filled a need in the community, but has also allowed Small Haul to build lasting, long-term relationships with their customers.
Below, we sat down with Robby to chat with him about how he built a meaningful business around dumpsters for rent.
What inspired you to start Small Haul Containers? How did you get your idea or concept for the business?
My mind runs all day, every day thinking of opportunities. My wife and I bought a house in Johnson County as a fixer-upper, and we quickly realized the only dumpster companies in this area had the great big ones used on commercial jobs, which was just too big of a dumpster for what we needed.
Tell us about your background – did you always want to start your own business?
I grew up working for my best friend’s dad, who was a land developer, and I also worked for an agricultural startup, which I really enjoyed.
I love small business. Period. I’ve always wanted to have a family business that I could pass down.
What was your mission when you decided to start Small Haul? How has that mission evolved over time?
To provide great customer service and simply make a difference – and that hasn’t changed!
What do your day-to-day responsibilities look like?
We are a small business, so I wear more hats than I can count. I primarily handle the sales side, as well as routing the trucks and equipment.
How long have you been in business?
My wife and I started the company in June of 2018.
Can you describe your ideal customers?
Our ideal customer is a residential homeowner looking to clean out their basement or garage.
Why do you feel your customers choose you over your competitors?
We offer great service! We were the first company in KC to offer 100% online booking.
How do you feel Small Haul impacts the Kansas City community?
We are helping trash make its way to the correct landfills, and we’re also impacting the customers we serve by building relationships with them.
What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned since starting Small Haul?
People need us! The amount of repeat customers we have is amazing.
What are your future goals for Small Haul? Where do you see your business in the next year? In the next five years? The next ten years?
We don’t need to be the biggest dumpster company in KC – we just want to continue to provide a service like no other company. In the next year I see us growing a little, but I’m more like a turtle when it comes time to growing a company. In five years, my goal is to add on another branch of Small Haul, and in ten years…well, just follow us on Facebook or Instagram, because there will be some awesome things happening!
If people only remember one thing about Small Haul, what would you want them to remember?
That we serve others the best that we possibly can. You call, we haul!
