Residential Dumpster Rentals Make it Easy to Clean or Remodel Your Home
The best way to discard old fixtures and construction materials from a renovation project is an all-inclusive dumpster rental from a local company, like us, at Small Haul Containers. You can keep your work site clean and safe as you go by placing your refuse into the dumpster, rather than letting it pile up in your garage or driveway. And, if one of your neighbors is planning their own reno, sharing the cost of a residential dumpster rental is a great way to save money on your project.
Fifty-two percent of homeowners planning to remodel schedule their work for the fall season, according to a study published by Zillow. If you’re planning a renovation during the next couple of months, you’re in good company – and it’s likely your neighbors may be planning something, too.
How to Share a Dumpster with a Neighbor
Build a sense of community with your next-door neighbors, or those just down the street, by extending an offer to share a south Kansas City dumpster rental with them. Here are a few ways you can find out whether someone may be looking for bulk garbage handling.
Word-of-mouth. You probably chat with your nearby neighbors a couple of times a week, as you both step outside to grab your mail from the mailbox or do some yard work on the weekends. Mention that you’re going to be doing a remodeling project and will be renting a dumpster. Chances are good either they or someone they know are going to be doing the same very soon. You can then contact your neighbors with the remodeling plans to ask if they’d like to share a dumpster rental with you.
Next Door app. This fun neighborhood communications app connects you with folks from all over your city – and near where you live. Each post you make is labeled with your neighborhood or subdivision name, so others will know how close in proximity you are to them. We bet if you mention that you’d like to offer up some of your dumpster space to others in exchange for a few dollars, someone would take you up on that.
Direct invitation. If you already know one of your neighbors is about to embark on a bathroom remodel, or if they’re going to be cleaning out their basement, you can directly ask them if they’d be interested in sharing a residential dumpster rental in southern Jackson County in Missouri and Johnson County in Kansas.
Subdivision or Neighborhood Event. Plan your renovation around the timing of another neighborhood event, like an HOA-wide yard sale. Offer up space in your rental dumpster for yard sale items that don’t sell. (Just make sure your rubbish is already in the dumpster, so you don’t accidentally overfill it.)
Choosing the Right Size Residential Dumpster Rental for Your Project
Small Haul Container rents dumpsters in five sizes, the smallest of which can hold six average-sized household clothes dryers. Our largest can hold 20! Compare notes on what you and your neighbors need to discard into the dumpster to determine which dumpster size is right for you.
Let’s take a look at our dumpster options to give you a better idea of what size to choose.
- 6 Cubic Yard Dumpster for Rent
The smallest of our containers. This dumpster size is ideal for small kitchen or bathroom demolitions, small garage cleanouts, or basement clean-outs. - 10 Cubic Yard Dumpster for Rent
The perfect size for medium projects around your house, like kitchen and bathroom remodels, deck demolitions, or medium-sized household cleanouts. - 13 Cubic Yard Dumpster for Rent
This dumpster is also ideal for medium-sized projects, but we consider the 13-cubic yards to be more versatile than the 10-cubic-yard dumpster. This one will accommodate fencing material, roofing, and medium-to-large kitchen and bathroom remodels. - 16 Cubic Yard Dumpster for Rent
If you removed all the seats and interior features from a full-sized minivan, you’d get the capacity of this dumpster. You can fit multiple large projects into it, including fire or flood restorations, deck demolitions, and large clean-outs. - 20 Cubic Yard Dumpster for Rent
The granddaddy of our dumpster rentals, this massive dumpster can fit large window or glass door projects, major home improvement projects, roofing, storm restorations, or debris from building an addition on your home.
Sharing the Cost of a Dumpster for Rent
Once you’ve found someone to share your rental dumpster, and you know what size you need, together you’ll need to decide on how to split the cost.
When it comes to sharing costs, things can get tricky. If you are planning to use the majority of the space in the dumpster you rent for your project in Prairie Village or Overland Park, you should accept that you’ll be paying the majority of the rental fee. Or, if you intend to each fill the dumpster with equal amounts, a 50-50 split on cost is probably the best route.
If you’re allowing other neighbors to drop off small amounts of rubbish they’d like to get rid of, consider asking them for a small donation – five or 10 dollars, for example – to put toward your rental fee.
How you choose to share the cost is totally up to you. When you place your order through the Small Haul Containers website, you’ll know the exact price of your weekly rental, so there are no surprises. This will help you divide the cost among your neighbors who are looking to share the dumpster with you.
A Few Things to Consider Before Sharing a Dumpster
Before you agree to share a dumpster with a neighbor, make sure you’re on the same page about how to dispose of things and what to dispose of inside your rental container.
- All items in your dumpster should be level or below the top of the dumpster.
- The dumpster will fit in your driveway! Even our largest container still fits comfortably inside a standard parking space, and we protect your driveway with a special barrier before we drop off the dumpster.
- If you are disposing of yard waste, you must not mix it with other items inside the dumpster. Please plan to rent a separate dumpster for your yard waste.
- You can put almost anything into your rental dumpster, but unfortunately, Small Haul Containers (and most other dumpster rental companies) cannot accept:
- Paint or paint cans
- Chemicals, like freon
- Solvents of any kind
- Oil tans or drums
- Radioactive waste
- Highly-flammable liquids or other materials
- Bio-medical waste or infectious waste
- Liquids of any kind
- Toxic or hazardous materials
